Based on the novel “Ghetto Cowboy” by G. Neri, Writer/Director Ricky Staub presents his first feature film Concrete Cowboy with a heartfelt historical storyline that highlights the significance of community and power of cultivating a father and son relationship despite the systemic obstacles.
Concrete Cowboy stars Caleb McLaughlin, Idris Elba, Jharrel Jerome, Byron Bowers, Lorraine Toussaint, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, and members of the Fletcher Street Stables. The Fletcher Street Stables is a real-life North Philadelphia urban-horse riding culture working tirelessly to keep the spirit of this rich history alive for generations to come.
First-time actress and member of the Fletcher Street Stables, Ivannah Mercedes (Esha), gave an authentic performance. She became a natural confidant and loving friend to Caleb McLaughlin (Cole) in the film. “I’m so grateful for the support I received from the cast,” says Mercedes. “Idris is awesome. Even though he’s a superstar, he’s so down to earth. Lorraine has been so supportive and kind of the big sister I’ve always wanted. Caleb showed me the ropes, making sure I didn’t get too nervous or overthink things. We’re closer in age, so it was fun to hang out. They’ve all been great.”
From beginning to end, every character gave their all to the role of portraying what it feels like to have your way of life taken from you to accommodate the norms of gentrifying a community to meet the demand of livable land. Cliff “Method Man” Smith shows us another side to his acting ability when he depicts the idea of working in law enforcement but not forgetting your community roots and the value of preserving a culture that is often ignored or left behind in society.
Concrete Cowboy is an enjoyable film that will spark the discussion of what it means to be a Black Cowboy/Cowgirl in America. The idea of shifting away from the stereotypical street life in hopes of becoming one with a community of sisters and brothers is a beautiful sight to behold. These are the stories of the African American culture that make me proud.
Synopsis:
When fifteen year-old Cole (Caleb McLaughlin) is expelled from school in Detroit, he is sent to North Philadelphia to live with Harp (Idris Elba), his estranged father. Harp finds solace in rehabilitating horses for inner city cowboys at the Fletcher Street Stables, a real-life black urban horsemanship community that has provided a safe haven for the neighborhood residents for more than 100 years. Torn between his growing respect for his father’s community and his reemerging friendship with troubled cousin Smush (Jharrel Jerome), Cole begins to reprioritize his life as the stables themselves are threatened by encroaching gentrification.
Interesting Facts:
- Caleb McLaughlin received first-time riding lessons in Atlanta to prepare for this role. Western boots and a cowboy hat with a helmet were purchased so he could ride with protection.
- Idris Elba has a slight allergic reaction to horses which meant wearing gloves and long sleeved shirts to limit his exposure.
- All of the cast had to undergo some level of training with the equestrians.
