Almost Christmas Movie Review
While attending the 2016 Essence Music Festival, I had the honor of listening to a few members of the Almost Christmas cast discuss their roles in the upcoming film. It was then that I realized something awesome was coming our way.
I absolutely love the holiday season and look forward to eating good food and spending time with family. Therefore being able to watch a movie that expresses the joy and pain we sometimes go through during this time is actually therapeutic. So when I received the opportunity to attend an advance screening for the film here in Houston, I knew a lot of laughter would be involved. This was truly an entertaining experience.
Before the film began we were treated to some eye candy from Santa’s elves in the form of two men named Mike and Derrick. I must say this was a pleasant surprise 🙂 There was a DJ playing some of my favorite music along with the placement of an Almost Christmas gift bag in my seat. This was a nice treat too. Some movie watchers also received prizes such as gift cards and a sweater similar to what the film cast is wearing in their promo picture above. With snacks in hand and a full house we were ready for the movie to start.
The most anticipated character I was looking forward to seeing was Academy Award Winner and Comedian Mo’Nique. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen her on the big screen and I must say she is hilarious! Mo’Nique’s comedic skills are right on time as she offers the, “Tell It Like It Is Auntie” appeal to the film. She will indeed have you grabbing your stomach as you laugh uncontrollably.
Comedian JB Smoove also adds the “Crazy Uncle” affect with his not so smooth shenanigans. He is truly a character that is beyond help and in need of a life preserver.
Actress Gabrielle Union, who is also the executive producer, stated that everyone will be able to identify themselves or a family member in the movie. If I can be honest, the character I most identified with is Gabrielle’s character named “Rachel.” As a single mother, it was hysterically on point to see parts of myself in this woman.
One of the most profound moments is when Rachel’s daughter Niya, played by Nadej K. Bailey, sits down to have a chat about her mother’s reaction to life and love. When Niya says as I paraphrase, “It’s okay to be able to carry the load by yourself, but sometimes it’s good to have someone help you carry the load” I almost passed out. Do you know that feeling in church when the preacher says something that hits your heart? Well, at this point in the movie I wanted to fall down in my seat because the child is absolutely right. Therapy at its best.
There is also another comedic moment that helps me realize how technology plays a critical role in our lives and the lives of our children. Long gone are the days when family problems aren’t broadcasted on social media. The children in this movie held it down and showed us they know how to have a good time too.
With so many characters, funny and reflective moments throughout the film, I encourage everyone to bring their family along for a good time. Writer and Director, David E. Talbert did an outstanding job and I am delighted to share my thoughts on this film.
Almost Christmas will be available in theaters November 11. View more photos from the Houston screening and cast as they promoted the film on the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Enjoy!
