Kat Rodriguez, the saxophonist for Beyonce, shared how her son Keyon Harrold Jr. and his father, famous musician Keyon Harrold, were victims of racial profiling at an NYC Arlo SoHo Hotel recently. The assailant, a 22-year-old woman, accused Kat’s son of stealing her iPhone (which was later found by an Uber driver), and the visual altercation of the woman attacking the father and son will leave you speechless.
As a mother of a Black son, my heart aches for this family. The fact that children are accused of doing something wrong based on their skin color is gut-wrenching. As a Black woman, I have encountered my fair share of racism, and it does not feel good at all and can happen to any person of color.
The NYPD is currently looking for the assailant who also gave an over the phone interview to CNN. Read her statement here. Assailant’s Response Via CNN.
Arlo Hotels released a statement via Instagram. Many call for better proactive training and accountability for the hotel’s actions based on the SoHo manager’s biased response towards Keyon Harrold Jr.
We continually live in a world in which we are judged by our skin color and not the content of our character. Through it all, the work towards the Dream must continue. We’re awaiting justice to be served. View the video of the altercation from Keyon Harrold’s camera, newly released Arlo SoHo Hotel footage, and Gayle King’s interview with assailant Miya Ponsetto.
