The Houston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. honored Judges Alice Bonner and Belinda Hill at the 18th Annual Jazz Soirée Scholarship Fundraiser on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2019, at the Marriot Marquis Hotel.
Over 1600 guests celebrated the theme of “Beads, Masks, Parasols, and Jazz” as they danced the night away to the sounds of Houston musicians Joe Carmouche and Lloyd Hughes. KMJQ/MAJIC 102.1 FM’s Funky Larry Jones served as the event’s emcee.
The Honorable Alice Bonner and The Honorable Belinda Hill, have created a remarkable path as women of color who are blazing trails to provide access to judicial careers.
Delta Sigma Theta recognized Judge Bonner as Houston’s first African-American woman judge and Judge Hill for her career as a prosecutor and assistant district attorney. In addition to praising both women for their accomplishments, the organization acknowledged the “19 New Faces of Justice,” where 14 judges were present.
In partnership with One Delta Plaza Educational Center (ODPEC), several thousands of dollars in scholarships will be given to students in pursuit of higher education within the Greater Houston Area.
