In the Pot Sports

Houston Texans 2016 Season

Okay, I get it. It’s just preseason and preseason is over, but something is different. ?

I am a fan of the Houston Texans, although I do enjoy playing fantasy football and supporting other players. For the first time in Texans history we won all of our preseason games. The significance of this historic moment isn’t placed upon the number of wins during preseason, but it’s how we won them that is so resounding.

Our defense, offense, and special teams are making some noise. Not just any noise, but the kind of noise that makes doubters question the validity of their disbelief.

Texans fans have endured some hardships through the years that made us question the existence of our franchise. I don’t know about you, but when Gary Kubiak transitioned over to Denver and ended up winning a Super Bowl with Wade Phillips, I was thinking, “This could be us but you playing.” Shout out to Rae Sremmurd. Anywho, I was happy for Gary and sad at the same time.

Fast forward to the 2016 NFL season and the Houston Texans have selected Brock Osweiler as their quarterback. At first I was thinking, “Really?” Then I told myself, “Let’s just wait and see how this all turns out.” Well, there appears to be something cooking in this pot of gumbo and I like it!

My heart goes out to Coach O’Brien because he and his staff must make the final decision for the 53 man roster. In my eyes, all of the players tonight we’re playing as if they were already on the team. Everyone had some fight in them. This is what I like to see. Teamwork shows up out there on that field. Everyone is doing their part.

When we beat the Arizona Cardinals 34-24 during preseason, my antenna went up. We overcame the powerhouse running ability of David Johnson and that was a breath of fresh air. Once again, I know it’s only preseason but we did it differently y’all.

For our final preseason game tonight we beat the Cowboys 28-17. Another breath of fresh air. I know what it’s like to argue with a diehard “Cowboys Fan” about our team record and have them rebuttal with, “At least we have have five championships!” And Texans fans rebuttal with, “Yeah, but you won the last championship in 1995 and we didn’t exist!” I can’t wait to hear the Cowboys fans excuses now. I know, it’s just preseason.

So, I would like to say thank you to all of the players and coaching staff of the Houston Texans. Brock Osweiler is a true leader and you can tell the players are feeling him by the reaction of their plays. Is everyone perfect? Heck no, but the magic and chemistry is there. Jaelon Strong is stepping up and molding into some great WR magic, Will Fuller is stepping up and he looks phenomenal (one of my fantasy players), Braxton Miller is laying in the cut, and we can’t forget our main man Deandre Hopkins.

The Special Teams unit looks unified with purpose. We’re seeing Charles James II is stepping up and making a difference. I don’t remember a time our Special Teams ever looked as good as they do now. Defense is not only making plays, they’re returning the balls for touchdowns. When your Offense, Defense, and Special Teams comes together like this you are unstoppable.

So I ask myself, “Are we going all the way to the Super Bowl?” Or, “Are we really going all the way to our backyard for the Super Bowl?” Only time will tell. The Kansas City Chiefs game followed by the New England Patriots will be our true tests. These two teams are our Achilles heel. These matchups will determine what we’re really made of, although right now I feel we’re on the brink of greatness.

I close with this, as we embrace the 2016 NFL season it’s been 14 years since the Houston Texans were born. The number 14 biblically signifies double measure of spiritual perfection. Double for our trouble. Could this be our year? A double prize of the Super Bowl and on our team’s turf in Houston? Could this be our year? Things that make you go hmmm.
