It’s incredible to see what two women can accomplish when they work together and put aside their differences. Last night, August 31, 1.2 million people worldwide witnessed an 8-year reunion between music artists Brandy & Monica on IG Live for the Verzuz Battle.
And to my surprise, I received the greatest quarantine gift when it was announced that a virtual concert featuring these significant artists’ work would occur on my actual birthday. The pure bliss and joy of listening to the music that left an imprint of my view towards adulthood in the 90s is poetic symmetry.
In my opinion, there are no losers in this battle because we all won the privilege of watching these women discuss their growth as an artist and a human being. In case you didn’t know the backstory of why it took so long for these women to be in the same room with one another, Brandy & Monica shared how the outside world played a major part in the downfall of their friendship and camaraderie.
Thankfully God provided a “Won’t He Do It” miracle and allowed these women to hash out their differences and share their gifts with the world during a critical time of need. Here are my favorite moments from the Brandy & Monica Verzuz.
1.) What Are Those?
First, let me say, both women looked great as they wore the attire that matched their personality, vibe, and mood. Brandy reminded me of a woman comfortable in her skin and not afraid to adorn a classy bohemian chic look. I somehow noticed Brandy’s white mules and immediately thought of an ode to the shoes in Monica’s “Before You Walk Out Of My Life” video. That was sneaky cute.
Monica came ready to slay the runway in a head to toe Fendi look that was Magnifique. Everyone in the chat had a thorough debate on whether Monica was wearing boots or sandals and had everyone asking, “What are those?” The conclusion developed with the finding of thin-strapped sandals matched elegantly with leather pants to create an effortless look. Overall, the fashion represented their growth as women. Loved it.
2.) The R&B Vote
I love the fact that Kamala Harris is a Black woman who can quickly insert herself into Black functions and fit comfortably to discuss voting’s prevalence and power. I think it was an absolutely genius move for these ladies to utilize this platform to encourage everyone to register and vote. Brandy & Monica are also taking 100% of the proceeds from the limited-edition merchandise for the battle and donating the funds to Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote campaign.
3.) Giddy vs. Chill
Brandy’s school girl excitement and poetry moments truly reflected her spirit during this epic space and time. Monica displayed a chill and layin’ in the cut vibe to match her fly outfit. It was refreshing to watch a yin and yang effect that balanced these two women out nicely.
Be sure to check out new music from Brandy’s B7 album and Monica’s new single, “Trenches,” and Verzuz Radio on Apple Music, which features their catalog of hits.
