WR Antonio Brown has been released from the Oakland Raiders per the organization’s press release and is now a free agent. A lot of controversy has surrounded Antonio and at this point I’m hoping that Antonio the human being is mentally and physically okay.
To better understand the journey of what led up to this public outcry and team dismissal, here’s a quick timeline of the Antonio Brown vs. Oakland Raiders saga:
March 10, 2019 – The Oakland Raiders acquired Pro Bowl WR Antonio Brown from the Pittsburgh Steelers for 3rd and 5th round picks in the 2019 draft. New contract worth $50.125 million over the next three seasons. Guaranteed cash estimated worth $30.125 million.
July 30, 2019 – Antonio protests the NFL banning his Schutt Air Advantage helmet which if worn, puts the player’s safety at risk.
August 12, 2019 – Arbitrator rules against Antonio Brown’s helmet of choice.
August 13, 2019 – Antonio Brown files another grievance and requests 1-year grace period to phase out helmet.
August 18, 2019 – Antonio did not attend Raiders’ preseason training camp and was fined $40,000.
August 22, 2019 – Antonio did not participate in the Raiders’ walk through and received an unexcused absence fine of $13, 950.
August 25, 2019 – Antonio loses second grievance to wear old helmet and eventually chooses an approved Xenith Shadow helmet and endorsement deal.
September 4, 2019 – Antonio and GM Mike Mayock have a verbal disagreement and rumors began circulating insinuating more occurred between the two.
September 4, 2019 – Antonio posted on Instagram a letter given to him by Raiders’ GM Mike Mayock and gives additional commentary about this fine response. Mayock is undoubtably infuriated at this public attempt of embarrassment.
September 6, 2019 – News reports state the Antonio gave an apology to the organization surrounded by team captains and all was well. Raiders’ Head Coach John Gruden also stated that he believed Antonio would be playing the season opener’s Monday Night Football game. Antonio also releases a YouTube video which features a recording between he and head coach John Gruden.
September 7, 2019 – Raiders fine Antonio $215,000 for violating team rules and abolish his $29.125 million guaranteed money.
September 7, 2019 – Antonio demands a release from the Oakland Raiders.
September 7, 2019 – (12:00 Noon ET) Raiders release Antonio Brown.
September 9, 2019 – Signs with the New England Patriots.
September 10, 2019 – Accused of sexual assault.
September 16, 2019 – A second incident of sexual misconduct is reported.
September 19, 2019 – Sends threatening text to 2nd accuser.
September 20, 2019 – Patriots release Antonio Brown.
