San Antonio, TX Vegan Food Hunt Tour

We don’t talk about how challenging it is to find vegan/vegetarian food spots when traveling across the country. Nevertheless, I love a good challenge, and a quick trip to San Antonio, Texas, put me to work to stay on my preferred eating regimen.

Here’s a small recap of a few restaurant spots I visited that serve vegan and vegetarian food items and what I selected from their menu.

THE JERK SHACK – 10234 TX-151 Suite 103 San Antonio, Texas 78251

Although I became engrossed in trying the Vegetarian Curry plate, I often regret not trying the jerk or fried chicken. As a former majority meat eater now turned vegan-ish Southern woman, I know the value of trying a restaurant’s specialties. Overall, I enjoyed the well-seasoned cabbage and the plantains with peas and rice. The fried green tomatoes with jerk ranch were delicious, too.

SOUTHERN GRIT TO-GO – 849 E Commerce St. San Antonio, Texas 78205

If you’re near the Riverwalk Shops in Downtown San Antonio, Texas, there is a restaurant named Southern Grit in the food court that offers vegan gumbo. Needless to say, this isn’t your typical gumbo because it’s vegan, meatless, and beans. The Cajun rice with an okra base, plus a little spice, made me appreciate Southern Grit’s option on the menu.

FOGO DE CHÃO – 849 E Commerce St. #393 San Antonio, Texas 78205

Don’t be intimidated by meat eaters. When I sat down at the neatly curated table, I told my waiter this was the first time I’d been back to Fogo de Chao since I turned vegan. And this restaurant is one of my all-time favorites, especially when it comes to the huge selection of meat choices they offer. Now, I am remembering how much I love the market table and the vast selection of vegetarian and vegan options one may choose for one’s liking.
