SWARM: The Sting You Didn’t See Coming

Hear me in my most Southern accent when I say, “Y’all, expect the unexpected.” OMG comes to mind after viewing the horror series “Swarm” from co-creators and executive producers Janine Nabers and Donald Glover, premiering on Prime Video on March 17.

For a synopsis backdrop, “Swarm” follows Dre (Dominique Fishback), an obsessed fan of the world’s biggest pop star who sets off on an unexpected cross-country journey. And what a journey it is. Of course, many will speak of similarities between a global superstar’s hive of fans for this project’s main attraction; however, this is a vivid reminder that many fandoms can be brutal and toxic when protecting the shining star they most admire in this technology landscape.

The series is set in 2016-2018 and utilizes Houston, Texas, as the main backdrop to build upon the characters in the film. If you’re familiar with Houston and nostalgic references, many will be entertained with humor to see Sharsptown Mall, AKA The Plaza, in all its glory before it went downhill. Frenchy’s chicken, a Black-owned Houston restaurant staple in the community, compliments a unique scene as a worthy food choice for a two-piece, fries, biscuit, and pepper on the side with a strawberry soda. I’m getting hungry already thinking about it. And yes, fast food/junk food is essential to this film’s puzzle that will have you asking yourself, “What is on the menu tonight?”

Although I cannot reveal vital scenes you will witness, I questioned whether I should go pray or begin anointing my head with oil after viewing the first two episodes. This series covers some graphic scenes, and I sometimes had to close my eyes. So yes, this is indeed a horror movie in every sense. Henceforth, I persevered and became invested and genuinely intrigued by all who came across my screen, specifically during episode three. And my favorite line from episode five is, “Girl, this is Texas; We’ll shoot you and then drink a beer over your body.” I immediately fell out in laughter. The comedic timing in the series hits you in pockets you don’t expect right when you need it to.

Dominique Fishback is one of my favorite “Don’t Sleep On Her” actresses, and she will consistently deliver when it comes to a scene, set, environment, storyline, and more. Dominique transformed and morphed into a different being that pulls you in, wanting to know more about her development. Chloe Bailey is another favorite young actress of mine who brings the heat with her character’s dialogue as Dre’s sister while offering a new perspective in this role. And the surprise appearances you will encounter along the way are such a treat to behold as if you’re receiving a piece of candy in your treat bag on Halloween.

Overall, if you’re a horror fan, “Swarm” is a series you don’t want to miss. The cast features Dominique Fishback, Chloe Bailey, Damson Idris, Karen Rodriguez, Christopher Avila, Nandini Minocha, Pam Trotter, and Marcus Rory Culkin. Additional guest stars include, Rickey Thompson, Paris Jackson, Rory Culkin, Kiersey Clemons, and Byron Bowers. “Swarm” will have its opening night tv premiere at the 2023 SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, with the cast and crew on March 11, 2023. All episodes will premiere exclusively on Prime Video on March 17, 2023.
