UGLYDOLLS Film Review

With the constant development of technology and social media in our world today, we often forget the true definition of love towards ourselves and others. If you are in need of an animated visual reminder, STXFilms is offering a great message of self-assurance to young and adult viewers in their new film, UGLYDOLLS, premiering in theaters May 3.

Inspired by the plush toy sensation created in 2001, UGLYDOLLS brings to life characters that take us on a musical journey as they learn their true identity and the importance of having imperfections. Building a human being’s self-esteem should begin at an early age, despite the occurrence of roadblocks via mean messages, spoken words with harsh intent, and disruptive actions along the road of life. UGLYDOLLS shares insight on how you can maneuver against these tactics and individuals with hidden agendas.

Lou (Nick Jonas), the antagonist in the film, represents himself as the great leader for the Institute of Perfection where beautiful dolls are treated on a higher scale of dignity and worth by their appearance. Not too distant from this land is where the town of Uglyville resides and the characters that live here represent everything that is wholesome and unique. Moxy (Kelly Clarkson) is the Uglydoll that refuses to give up and her cheerful spirit on screen is encouraging to watch. Uglydog (Pit Bull) brings that fiery personality that excites you with his humorous gestures and comical banter.

Another shining moment is the meaningful relationship that develops between Uglydoll Moxy (Kelly Clarkson) and a beautiful doll named Mandy (Janelle Monae) as they help each other to discover the individual beauty that lies within. “Unbreakable” is a featured song that Moxy and Mandy sing beautifully together in harmony and will certainly become a must-have digital download to inspire young listeners.

Other characters in the film include Ox (Blake Shelton), Lucky Bat (Wang Leehom), Babo (Gabriel Iglesias), Wedgehead (Emma Roberts), and Wage (Wanda Sykes) and a host of others that help us all to remember that “Flaws make us who we are” and there’s nothing wrong with living your life unapologetically.

UGLYDOLLS is in theaters Friday, May 3.

Synopsis:

In the adorably different town of Uglyville, weird is celebrated, strange is special and beauty is embraced as more than simply meets the eye. Here, the free-spirited Moxy (Clarkson) and her UglyDoll friends live every day in a whirlwind of bliss, letting their freak flags fly in a celebration of life and its endless possibilities.  In this all-new story, the UGLYDOLLS will go on a journey beyond the comfortable borders of Uglyville. There, they will confront what it means to be different, struggle with their desire to be loved, and ultimately discover that you don’t have to be perfect to be amazing because who you truly are is what matters most.
