WOLFWALKERS’ Animation & Character Design Master Class Experience

Glitter&Gumbo had the esteemed pleasure of attending a virtual Animation/Character Design Master Class with Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart hosted by the SAG-Aftra Foundation for the Academy Award-nominated film WOLFWALKERS. The beautifully animated story is available to view now on AppleTV+.

Truthfully, I’ve never considered myself to be the best at drawing pictures or illustrations of any kind, but when push comes to shove, and I need to create a design by hand, Angela will do what needs to be done. After today’s enlightening master class, major props go out to all of the Cartoon Saloon studio animators who worked behind the WOLFWALKERS project’s scenes to create excellent illustrations by hand. Everyone did a fantastic job of making us all feel that we could fly in animation illustration.

My illustration of the character “Mebh” in Wolf Walkers.

Created as a love letter to Kilkenny, Ireland, at least 80 animators worked on producing the WOLFWALKERS film. The main character Robyn is inspired by the illustrator’s wife when she was a little girl. When asked what projects the Cartoon Saloon has up its paper sleeve next for viewers, everyone should look out for a new AppleTV+ series that will be a huge announcement for all to enjoy. Congratulations to the Wolf Walkers team on your accomplishements thus far.

Synopsis: In a time of superstition and magic, a young apprentice hunter, Robyn Goodfellowe, journeys to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last wolf pack. While exploring the forbidden lands outside the city walls, Robyn befriends a free-spirited girl, Mebh, a member of a mysterious tribe rumored to have the ability to transform into wolves by night. As they search for Mebh’s missing mother, Robyn uncovers a secret that draws her further into the enchanted world of the Wolfwalkers and risks turning into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.
