Two of my favorite all-time Texans are now retired from the NFL. I’m a little sad as I write this post, due to the fond memories I have of them both as a player and an individual. Oh yes, this is going to be a sentimental read.

Andre Johnson

The quiet yet strong demeanor of Andre Johnson always intrigued me. Normally when you think of a Wide Receiver whose a 7-time Pro Bowler, you imagine a player that is a little arrogant and off-putting at times. But no, not Andre Johnson. He was ? each time you saw him and he stayed true to his character.

When Andre wasn’t on the field he always set aside time to give back to the Houston community and inner city families/kids. During the holiday season it would bring joy to my heart to see children racing through a store to pick out toys. One year he spent $18,000 (out of pocket) on toys and attended the occasion via Skype, since he was unable to attend. Andre’s mother participated in his honor.

Every now and then you would catch him giving that sneaky charming smile. It was infectious and I loved to see him in those moments.

After 14 seasons, we shall never forget that one time he lost his cool and showed us how human he really is. The look of astonishment flashed across all of our faces on November 28, 2010, as we watched Andre pummel Cortland Finnegan (Tennessee Titan) on the field. I didn’t know if I was supposed to yell “Stop!” or “Get him Andre!” He threw down that day. Everyone has a breaking point and Andre was a witness that some of the best get upset too.

I salute Andre Johnson for his tireless effort and tenacity as he embraced the ups and downs of the Houston Texans organization. He will forever be #80 to me.

Arian Foster

What can I say about a man who started his NFL career undrafted and under the radar in 2009. With his humble beginning, I saw something special in Arian and knew he would be an asset to our team.

Back in 2011 I reached out to Arian via social media and invited him to a reading event. He replied and offered to come share his favorite Dr. Seuss book. It was an epic moment and I was overjoyed.

It was hilarious to hear him ask, “Where is my hat?” As I forgot to offer him one due to my being in five places at one time brain. The kids were so excited to meet him as he read his favorite Seuss book “Green Eggs and Ham.”

Arian is a unique soul who is unashamed to express himself how he sees fit. I’ll never forget the time he announced to the world he was going Vegan and everyone freaked out. Many were questioning the idea of football players surviving without meat. However, he proved the naysayers wrong and continued to play the game he loved.

Last but but not least, Arian’s famous “Namaste” greeting is one of my favorite touchdown responses. He didn’t need to dance or do a jig to celebrate a touchdown. Arian bowed in humbleness to show his gratitude for the opportunity to cross that goal line.

So today I salute the Double A Crew for retiring one week apart from each other. Arian retired on October 24 and Andre retires on October 31. I want to celebrate the brilliance of these two men setting goals and accomplishing their dreams. God bless you both during your retirement and enjoy.
