Glitter&Gumbo is paying homage to Houstonian George Floyd, whose life was taken on May 25, 2020, by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin who was founded guilty of murder by the court of law.
Many activists, families, and human beings across the world took to the streets of their respective communities to shout, “Enough is enough” when it comes to killing Black lives with racial intent and motive.
In honor of this historical period, the following events will occur to commemorate George Floyd’s life and all Black lives that matter in our world.
The Fountain of Praise church in Houston, Texas is hosting a free commemorative concert on Sunday, May 30, 2021 from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. and the event is free and open to the public. Harlem-based bandleader, activist, curator and entrepreneur Michael Mwenso will host a television show honoring the legacy of Geroge Floyd one year after his death. Directed by Sing Lathan, Mwenso guides us through a reflective moment honoring the spiritual sacrifice Floyd made and how it launched a movement that shifted the consciousness of the world. In the spirit of Black artistic expression, the event includes performances from Mwenso and his band The Shakes as well as vocalists Brianna Thomas and Vuyo Sotashe and poet Harold Green. The special includes interviews with curators Destinee Ross-Sutton and Larry Ossei-Mensah and performances of “Mountain Top,” an original poem by Green, Irving Berlin’s “Super Time,” Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” and Mwenso’s original “Stop Playing Them Games.”
Filmed at Chelsea Music Hall in New York City, the event will air tonight at 8:30 P.M. ET on ALL ARTS. Viewers can stream the half-hour special nationwide on the ALL ARTS app as well as allarts.org and in the New York Metro area on the ALL ARTS TV channel.
