This week showcased something I was already aware of, and that is the fact that Houston, Texas will not stand for anyone repping our city when they have not paid their dues.
As a native Houstonian, I understand this mantra wholeheartedly. Therefore when R&B singer K. Michelle stated on her Instagram account that she was given an "Official Day" in Houston, I wasn't worried or concerned. Why? Because I knew our city wouldn't hand-out Proclamations to non Houstonians that haven't contributed to the community in any shape, form, or fashion.
This war cry didn't make sense to me, therefore I put my journalism degree to use and completed my research on the story. Therefore "K. Michelle Day" is not official and we can go on with the rest of our lives.
With that being said, we now have some Houston artists on a nationally televised show that we can support. VH1 recently aired their newest competition series titled "Signed" and guess what? There are four contestants on the series and they are Just Brittany (singer/rapper), Jazz Anderson (rapper), Jvoti (rapper), and Bria (singer).
The eight, hour-long episodes follow three moguls — rapper, entrepreneur and hip-hop artist Rick Ross, recording artist and Grammy award-winning songwriter The-Dream and Roc Nation’s SVP of A&R / Artist Management Lenny S— as they work to develop unsigned hip-hop and R&B artists in Atlanta. If you missed the first episode that premiered Wednesday on July 26 you can watch the full show on VH1.com.
Jazz and Just Brittany are already clashing and that may create some future tension if it isn't resolved. View a clip of their interaction below.
Believe or not, this show is really good and I applaud the producers for creating this vivid and raw concept. Some non Houstonians that I enjoyed watching are Jeff Chery (Leagane, Haiti rapper) and CozyWithTheCurls (New Orleans rapper). Jeff's cockiness threw me off a bit, but his swag is crazy and the flow is nice. I love CozyWithTheCurls' Nola vibe and his bounce beat had me hype. Cozy reminds me of the No Limit/Hot Boyz from back-in-the-day too.
