This fiasco had me pondering in thought. I had to ask myself, what is a teammate? We normally consider the people on a team, whether it be professional or personal, to coherently and competently get the job done. Do the work to help the company or group reach success.
The Los Angeles Lakers have several team members that are working together to complete the task of winning a basketball game. Off the court, it seems as if the togetherness ends and the word teammate becomes null and void.
In case you haven’t heard the story, Lakers guard and rookie, D’Angelo Russell, secretly videotaped a conversation he was having with teammate Nick Young. While D’Angelo was recording Nick opened up and shared the fact that he cheated on his fiancé, rapper Iggy Azalea.
Cheating on your fiancé is one betrayal, but the madness doesn’t end there. Once again, D’Angelo secretly recorded the conversation without Nick knowing about it, and voila! The video magically creeps out into social media. Betrayal number two has appeared and shown its ugly head in the form of karma?
What I also pondered upon and found strange is that a “rookie” would be brave enough to pull a stunt like this. Where is the hierarchy? What happened to respecting those that have started before you. I guess the word teammate only applies on the court. Off the court anything goes and loyalty goes out the window.
D’Angelo Russell has since apologized for his part in the matter and claims he has no idea how the video came out. I get it, we all make mistakes and no one is perfect. This stunt is a piece of work though and two wrongs don’t make a right. Just know that the Los Angeles Lakers are now aware to not share any of their secrets with D’Angelo Russell?. Hopefully, a lesson was learned and the Los Angeles Lakers can work on the true definition of a teammate on and off the court.
