‘Insecure’ Premiere Delivers 3 Tips Entrepreneurs Can’t Miss

If you haven’t seen the premiere episode in Season four of HBO’s Insecure series, please watch it before reading my commentary. HBO graciously uploaded episode one absolutely free on YouTube. So don’t miss it.

The Insecure premiere party took place on Sunday, April 12, and many were glued to the television screen to view how the new phase in Issa Rae’s life will unfold. Love, career, and friendship are some underlining themes in her saga tale; however, the further development of Issa’s entrepreneurship mindset has awakened the businesswoman in me. Therefore I would like to discuss three a-ha moments entrepreneurs can’t miss.

1. Family, Friends, and Lovers Don’t Always Mix In Business

Issa clearly solidified a quid pro quo deal with her TSA Bae, who didn’t realize he wasn’t at the club during the operation of her event. Molly is caught up in a self-reflection drama that she fails to realize Issa needs her unwavering support with no bad vibes. Kelli will be Kelli and there’s nothing more to say about that :). When starting a business, sometimes it’s easier to hire friends and family to handle odd jobs within your company to save money. Sometimes this plan is feasible and productive. Other times, you end up taking your hair out when cousin Nae Nae decides to give away inventory to her friends. Nevertheless, each business is different, so proceed with familial caution.

2. Successful Mentors Bring Clarity To Dead Situations

Issa recognizing the genius in Condola’s ability to construct a successful event led to the workings of building Issa’s block party dream. The importance of having a mentor to guide you along your journey of entrepreneurship is critical for success. Surrounding yourself with people who have been where you desire to land, helps to give you the motivation and courage to do the impossible in a discouraging world.

“That’s My Man” Side Note: At the end of the day, business is business, and if we didn’t have a mutual homie relationship before our acquaintance, dating an ex-boyfriend of mine will not hurt my feelings. I have places to go, and if my ex isn’t on the path to greatness, so be it. Let that negro go!

3. Authenticity Closes Deals

How many times have we heard someone say, “Be yourself!” or “People want to see the real you” for the identification of your brand or product? One of the most epic moments for me in Episode four is when Issa’s DJ (her brother) breaks up the monotony of the atmosphere with an impromptu hood classic. I screamed with laughter at the top of my lungs to hear Khia’s “My Neck, My Back” play aloud! Although it was truly embarrassing to play a ratchet song amid a stuffy crowd, that crucial change made Issa step up to being her true self. Yes, networking and closing deals can be nerve-wracking; however, when you step into your passion, magic occurs.

Overall, Issa is budding into entrepreneurship while making a difference in her community. I look forward to watching the victories, trials, and tribulations she will endure in season four of HBO’s Insecure airing Sundays on HBO at 9pm CST.
