Lost & Found: Carlethia “Carlee” Russell’s Mystery Disappearance Investigation Continues

In case you missed it, America came together briefly to help search for missing Black woman Carlethia “Carlee” Russell who was last seen in Hoover, Alabama on July 15, 2023, when she reported seeing a toddler on the I459 highway. Carlee’s red Mercedes was left on the side of the interstate along with personal belongings. Many believed that an abductor or a human trafficking plot was the culprit in her disappearance.

After a two-day search, Carlee appeared by foot at her parent’s residence and was then taken to a local hospital for further medical attention. The Hoover Police Department briefly spoke with Carlee once and has been unable to verify her original statement.

Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis gave some shocking factual details regarding Carlee’s disappearance during a 2:30 PM press conference. The investigation is ongoing and there is no public safety threat. The focus is to determine what happened during the 49 hours she went missing. Here are a few details of what we know thus far:

  • *Carlee traveled 600 yards (equivalent to 6 football fields) while on the phone with 911
  • *Carlee made several computer searches on the day of her disappearance including:
    1.) How to take money from the register
    2.) Birmingham Bus Station Search
    3.) Search for the movie “Taken” which is about a woman being taken
  • *The toxicology report returned no results
  • *$107 cash in a right sock when found
