Music Mogul & Founder of Uptown Records Andre Harrell Has Died

While enjoying the sounds of DJ D-Nice in Club Quarantine After Dark, he abruptly announced that he would be closing his set early. Constant messages were popping up on his phone with the news of Andre Harrell’s death. At that moment, shock and disbelief hit us all.

As founder of Uptown Records, Andre Harrell revolutionized the music industry when his unique blend of hip-hop and R&B reached the masses, and created the culture he describes as, “Ghetto Fabulous.”

Before Andre became the innovative mogul we all love, his journey began as 1/2 of the rap group Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He then transitioned his talent to Def Jam Records and worked with his longtime friend, Russell Simmons. Uptown Records became his birthright there after and history evolved to higher heights. Andre later in life added the title President/CEO of Motown Records.

Heavy D, Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, Father MC, Al B. Sure are some of the music artists that came from the genius eyes, ears, and perspective of Andre Harrell.

One person in particular who always be remembered standing by his side, is Sean Combs AKA “Puff Daddy” who began as an intern under the tutelage of Andre Harrell’s guidance. Till his last breath, Sean Combs and Andre we’re continually working together on various projects, including a new BET miniseries “Uptown Records” which is scheduled for a 2020 release. Andre also served as the Vice Chair of the Revolt cable channel, a business venture of Sean Combs.

No one knows at this time the cause of death and we will wait for an official release to provide further details. We send our deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to his family, friends, and loved ones. May Andre Rest in Power.
