Known as the most recognized trophy in the world, the Oscar statuette is one of the top coveted awards in filmmaking achievement. On Sunday, February 24, 2019 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, historic moments in Black History were personified when several nominees of African-American descent won their unique category.
In the words of Ruth Carter, “It’s been a long time coming!” When Ruth first began her costume designer career working with director Spike Lee on the 1988 film, “School Daze” her love for this field blossomed into the creative genius we see today. As the winner of the Best Achievement In Costume Design for ‘Black Panther,” Ruth Carter became the first African-American to win this category.
Hannah Beachler also received an Oscar for the “Black Panther” production design and became the first African-American nominated and named as a winner in this category. We all felt the excitement and energy of Director/Writer Spike Lee when he accepted his first Oscar award and made history for the screenplay adaptation of the “Black Klansman.” Mahershala Ali is one of my favorite actors to watch on the big screen and he won an Oscar for his portrayal of Dr. Don Shirley in the “Green Book.” Peter Ramsey also became the first African-American to win an Oscar for “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” being named the best animated feature film of the year.
As we close out the final week of Black History Month, let us continue to use the words of Oscar winner Regina King and “push forward” the narrative for all to have their stories told through film. Congratulations to all of the nominees and you may view the full list of winners below.
