World-renowned rapper and Houstonian Travis Scott’s annual Astroworld Festival kicked off in Houston, Texas, with several local community events leading up to a two-day concert event scheduled to run November 5-6, 2021, at NRG Park. Unfortunately, the November 5 day one concert with headliner Travis Scott performing to close out the night ended in tragedy with eight lives lost and multiple concert-goers injured. Therefore Live Nation canceled day two of the event for Saturday, November 6, 2021.
Glitter&Gumbo is sharing what we know thus far to provide factual information and resources to help spread awareness regarding this investigation. Several officials have stated this is the first major mass casualty event anyone familiar with the Houston area has seen in their lifetime. Our prayers go out to everyone involved in this horrific tragedy.
Here’s What We Know Thus Far
To view and read about the promising futures of these young people whose lives were cut short after attending a concert for a fun-filled good time is heartbreaking. Families have identified seven of the eight victims as of November 7, 2021. Read more about the victims here. The family of Brianna Rodriguez, a 16-year-old victim, created a Go-Fund-Me account for anyone desiring to contribute funds in her honor.
ASTROWORLD FESTIVAL TRAGEDY PRESS CONFERENCE UPDATE
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner, Houston Fire Chief Sam Pena, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and other local officials provided a press conference with updated information stating this is now a criminal investigation. View footage from the media event below.
CAUSE OF DEATH
We are still awaiting the results from the medical examiner to determine the cause of death for all eight victims. The Houston Police Department requests that we allow them time to gather evidence and information to determine what entirely occurred at this event. Although speculation and rumors are plentiful, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner stated he received information that a security officer (Non-HPD) was pricked in the neck with an object for attempting to restrain another individual. On-site medical officials gave the security officer Narcan (emergency treatment for opioid overdose) to revive his unconscious body. HPD Chief Finner also exclaimed that attendees were also trampled during the concert, which is being investigated.
