“SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT” CAST AT THE 2017 ESSENCE FESTIVAL

The cast of “She’s Gotta Have It” spoke with the Essence Festival media in New Orleans, LA to discuss their new Netflix television series premiering on November 23rd.

“She’s Gotta Have It” is based on Spike Lee’s 1985 first independent film of the same name. The 10-episode series is considered as a contemporary update centered once again in Brooklyn, New York and identifies itself within a gentrified environment.

As a continuation of the original drama, main character Nola Darling (late twenties) maneuvers through the maze of dating three unique men in the form of Greer Childs, Jamie Overstreet, and Mars Blackmon while on a quest to understand who she really is.

“The Idea of a woman having three lovers was scandalous back then now, not so much,” states Tanya Lewis Lee, executive producer, and wife of Spike Lee. The rhyme or reason for this popular film being adapted for television is because of the vision Tanya Lewis Lee brought forth.

In attendance as well, legendary writer and director Spike Lee spoke about his influences and love for Morehouse College. He also shared a passionate message of how his parents played a critical role in developing his love for the arts.

“Some people chose a major based on what they’re parents wanted. They chose something that did not bring them joy,” stated Spike Lee. It is evident in the longevity of his career, that the body of work created 30 years ago possesses a powerful impact and relevancy in 2017. Be sure to watch the premiere of “She’s Gotta Have It” on Netflix November 23, 2017.
