The Grambling State University Tigers secured a major victory last night against Alcorn State and walked away as champions at the 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference Football Championship. With a final score of 40-32, fans across both aisles were up out of their seats as Alcorn State attempted to score in the final drive with 1:50 on the clock.

The Final Judgement gave us a suspenseful game ending filled with excitement, as both teams displayed why they are best of the best in the SWAC league.

In the first quarter Grambling’s QB Devante Kincade scored the first touchdown and the crowd went wild. Soon after, Alcorn responded with an impressive run by their leading rusher De’Lance Turner who is fun to watch on the field.

The Alcorn State University band gave us a hype rendition of Swag Surfin’ to let NRG Stadium know they came to win. At first it appeared to be a fast paced back and forth battle until Grambling ran away with a lead of 31-10 during the 2nd quarter.

From there, Alcorn struggled to keep up with Grambling and lost significant opportunities due to fumbles and the Tigers defense. During the 4th quarter Grambling’s score looked quite comfy, as the GSU band played Demi Lovato’s “Sorry Not Sorry” to signify a true champion was in the building.

However, what I love most about this game is that Alcorn refused to hand over the SWAC trophy without a final fight. Alcorn QB Lenorris Footman gave a 65-yard pass down the field that no one saw coming and it was exhilarating.

In the end, Grambling State University prevailed and will move on to compete in the Celebration Bowl against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Champions, North Carolina A&T on December 16, 2017 at the Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

Congratulations to the Grambling State University Tigers, Coach Broderick Fobbs, and his GSU staff for a second consecutive return to the Celebration Bowl Championship.
