The Nonnas: Travel With Me to Enoteca Maria Nonnas of the World

If you haven’t watched the Netflix film NONNAS, based on the true story of owner Joe Scaravella and how he overcame grief to fund his dream of exploring the connections between food and family, it’s an inspiring must-watch for late bloomers and dreamers.

While in New York, I knew I had to stop by Joe’s Italian restaurant, Enoteca Maria, and taste the food for myself. It was also a way to honor my Nonnas, my grandmothers, through my love of food and authentic human connection.

Joe originally created Enoteca Maria as a space for Italian grandmothers to cook and share their recipes. But over time, the spirit of celebration expanded to include other cultures hence the name, “Nonnas of the World.” Today, grandmothers from various countries are invited each week to share their culinary traditions with restaurant patrons.

Growing up, my family owned a catering business that always celebrated the diverse cooking styles of local chefs. I vividly remember a family friend, who was also Italian, and made the best pasta salad and mini sandwiches ever. So, my connection to this film feels deeply personal and deeply rooted.

Riding the ferry to Staten Island is so calming, and the walk to Enoteca Maria offers a peaceful, scenic experience. Watching those scenes in the film where Joe commutes back and forth helps you understand the risk, passion, and persistence it took to make his dream a reality.
