Twitter announced some exciting news for its Periscope users today. A significant update will be available in the coming weeks for the Periscope live video app. If you have no clue about the benefits of this social media technology, let me break it down for you.
Have you ever wanted to take a peak inside a celebrity’s world, ask an entrepreneur questions about their business, or wanted to attend an event or concert with no major funds available? Well, this is where Periscope enters your life. Whenever someone says, “Follow me on Periscope” that means you are getting ready to view live content on their feed. Most times when you open the app you can view some amazing content.
For example, one day I had the opportunity to watch a concert live. Although I didn’t attend the SXSW conference and festival this year, I was fortunate to hear Talib Kwali perform live on stage through the lens of a participant. Cool stuff. This is also a great app to conduct meetings or a discussion while interacting with the speaker live.
Currently, the live feeds last for 24 hours and Periscope automatically deletes the content from the user’s channel. Thankfully this is getting ready to change and a much needed search box will appear.
“We’ve seen incredible growth in our community and the number of live broadcasts created on Periscope over the past year,” said Periscope CEO and co-founder Kayvon Beykpour. “People are using Periscope to share what’s happening in the world around them, so we felt it was time to evolve beyond the restraint of 24 hours and allow this content to stay in the public record. We’re excited to release this capability along with a new way for people to search for broadcasts.”
The new updates include:
*Permanently saving broadcasts by default for everyone, both in their Periscope profiles and on Twitter. Periscope users will be able to delete their broadcasts at any time, and will have the option in settings to auto-delete broadcasts after 24 hours.
* A new search button will be accessible from the Global List and will allow people to search live broadcasts and replays by topic or title.
