Hair Love Wins The Animated Short Film Category At The 92nd Oscars

Karen Rupert Toliver and Matthew A. Cherry accept the Oscar® for Animated Short Film during the live ABC Telecast of The 92nd Oscars® at the Dolby® Theatre in Hollywood, CA on Sunday, February 9, 2020.

Congratulations to Karen Rupert Toliver and Matthew A. Cherry for winning the Oscar® for Animated Short Film. Hair Love is the third film in the history of the Academy Awards to feature a black protagonist character lead.

Matthew follows in the footsteps of the late great, Kobe Bryant, for being the 2nd former athlete to win an Oscar® and in the animated short film category. Kobe Bryant won this exact category in 2018.

During his acceptance speech, Matthew dedicated the award to Kobe Bryant, and to Houston teen, Deandre Arnold, who was banned from attending his Texas high school due to violating a Dreadlocks dress code rule. Deandre and his family also attended the 92nd Oscars as special guests of the Hair Love creators.

Bravo to everyone for a phenomenal moment in history.
