“US” Movie SXSW Film Premiere First Reaction Tips

Glitter&Gumbo had the esteemed privilege of watching the premiere of writer/director/producer Jordan Peele’s new film, “US” at SXSW in Austin, Texas.

The line for this highly anticipated horror movie was literally wrapped around the Paramount Theater building. SXSW attendees were eager to place their body in one of the most coveted seats at the annual film, music, and interactive festival.

Out of respect for the love of Jordan Peele and the performing arts realm, I will not spoil the film and give too many details about my extraordinary visionary encounter. Please believe, the commentary will be released on March 22, 2019, when “US” is available in theaters across the world.

I will, however, prepare you for the journey ahead within the world of a creative genius who tells us he likes to create outside of the box concepts. Yes, Jordan Peele, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and the entire cast were all present at the screening to behold this new wonder with the audience. The two children, Zora (SHAHADI WRIGHT JOSEPH) and Jason (EVAN ALEX) were phenomenal as well and you will see their acting skills truly add some fun flavor as well.

The synopsis begins with the setting in present day along the iconic Northern California coastline and stars Oscar® winner LUPITA NYONG’O as Adelaide Wilson, a woman returning to her beachside childhood home with her husband, Gabe (Black Panther’s WINSTON DUKE), and their two children, Zora (SHAHADI WRIGHT JOSEPH) and Jason (EVAN ALEX), for an idyllic summer getaway.

So, here are my “US” movie preparation tips to get you ready for the film release on March 22, 2019:

I Ain’t Never Scared, What?!
I wanna give a shout-out to the rapper Bone Crusher for being my muse for this first tip. Fans everywhere are stating how scared they are just by watching the trailer. Well honestly, after watching the film I must say that I am not at all afraid. A total entrapment of horror did not overtake my body but I was quite intrigued. The blood and guts made me cringe though at times. One unique aspect from the film that stayed with me however, is the idea of riding an escalator the next day made me question myself by saying, “Where am I going?” I literally had a “US” movie moment and laughed hysterically at myself. Lupita vibes were flowing all over me.

Hit Me Baby One More Time
Excuse the Brittney Spears reference but her song came to my mind as I was thinking about multiple occurrences. If you didn’t know, a Jordan Peele film must be viewed at least 2 times to fully grasp what this man is trying to offer. There is so much meat in this movie Gumbo that it is awesomely ridiculous! After the screening, Peele gave a Q&A with the cast and explained that he values the intelligence of an audience and no one is considered incompetent. Therefore in order to digest all of the ingredients in this pot just right, you gotta stir it more than once so it can all come together. Peele wants us to have a conversation after the film and discuss our findings. Trust me, your crew will definitely have a lot to discuss. I even encourage “US” post-film parties to cleanse your questions with a consensus of answers.

P.S. Don’t Talk To Me
If you’re going with friends, family, or a significant other make sure they don’t talk too much during the movie, which is why I recommend step 1. You need to be fully engaged because the content is thrown at you so fast that a thorough process time is needed.

Leave Them Babies At Home
US is rated R and not suitable at all for children. The adult entertainment aspect, however, is delightful if you like horror, guts, and blood. There are also some comedic points that give you a reprieve from the horror and thought consciousness that is quite intriguing. Don’t sneak your kids into this film and complain when they start having nightmares.

Beyond Black Panther
We as a people are forever attached to certain characters portrayed in great films, that it becomes a challenge at times to view actors in a different light. The entire US cast is phenomenal and Lupita N’Yongo gives a stellar performance that is Oscar worthy in my opinion. Jordan Peele also reminded the audience that Winston Duke’s Black Panther character “M’baku” is no more. Duke shines in this new role and he is a comical treat.

“US” Movie Discussion Party
After watching a Jordan Peele film you may be compelled to go home and complete a research project to dissect the contents. Besides, who doesn’t love conversing with friends to form hypotheses about great movies?

Hopefully, these quick tips help and don’t forget to watch the “US” film on March 22, 2019, in theaters. Also, come back for my top five A-Ha moments too.
