The Power of Black Storytelling – Roundtable With “Black Is King” Directors

As a creative, I thoroughly enjoy hanging around artistic geniuses to grasp their thought process and how they visually see the world. Per a previous post, I shared my initial reaction to watching Beyonce’s film, BLACK IS KING, and being mesmerized by the whole production.

Thankfully, we now have access to learn how the directors of this film began the tumultuous assignment of bringing Beyonce’s vision to life. Inspired by Disney’s LION KING, this phenomenal initiative held its own and told a Black perspective.

Watch below as Directors Jenn Nkiru, Joshua Kissi, Emmanuel Adjei, Blitz Bazawule, Ibra Ake, and Kwasi Fordjour share their thoughts on Color Of Change’s #TellBlackStories Podcast. For the first time, the directors discuss their creative journeys to the piece, how Blackness and community served as inspirations, and the impact it had on Black children.
